or To Put It Another Way The History Of Scotland

Most of the wars in Scottish history have actually been with our nearest neighbours the English or between ourselves with different clans falling out with each other or competing for power.
However in this section of the Scottish Jerk website we will be looking at some of the other major changes in our Scottish culture brought about by different events and power struggles.

Roman invasion although they did not conquer the whole country. |

Hadrian’s Wall built to protect the Roman Empire against Scots who refused to be conquered. However it was not until 409 that the last of the Roman armies left Scotland for good. |

King Alexander III defeats the Vikings at Largs. Read about the battle and the role of St Andrew (Scotland’s Patron Saint) and the Thistle in winning this battle. |

Alexander dies giving King Edward I of England an opportunity to seize the throne of Scotland. |

William Wallace emerges to leads a strong rebellion against the English rulers. However he was later betrayed by his own nobles before being put on trial in London and executed in 1305. |

Robert the Bruce crowned King at Scone Palace after defeating or killing all other challengers to the throne. |

One of the most famous battles in Scottish History. Bannockburn when the English army was defeated by a much smaller and less well equipped Scottish army. |

Declaration of Arbroath was drawn up and signed by the leading Scottish Figures and sent to the Pope asking for his official recognition of Scotland’s independence. |

Mary Queen of Scots was crowned as official monarch even though she was only one week old. |

Queen Mary (a Roman Catholic) flees for her life to London but was later executed in 1587 by her cousin Elizabeth I of England after suggested she was plotting treason against English Throne. |

James VI of Scotland achieves his life ambition and inherits the English throne becoming James I of England. |
