The town of Perth is also often referred to as being the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’. Located on the banks of the River Tay, Perth was the capital of Scotland and during the medieval period the bustling little town was locally known as Saint Johnstoun (St. John’s Town). Perth’s name, or Peairt in the Gaelic language, is derived from the word of the Picts for a copse or wood. Around 3 miles away, from the town of Perth, tourists will find the 16th century Elcho Castle, which features the most breathtaking vistas across the River Tay. The castle dates back to about 1570 when it’s building was commissioned by the Wemyss family who remained in possession until 1929. The Castle is now in the capable hands of Historic Scotland.

One of the most famous places of interest, nearby Perth, is one of the finest historical country homes in the Scottish nation, Scone Palace. Here you can thoroughly explore the interesting history of the palace, the place where the kings of Scotland were once crowned for example, Robert The Bruce who was crowned here in 1306.

As well as the tourist attractions mentioned earlier Perth has countless more, which means that it is a perfect town for a family vacation.   1. There are a lot of places in Perth, that are worth visiting. It is a vibrant modern city, with the monuments of historic value. It\’s easy to find an comfortable accommodation, as there are a lot of self catering cottages in this region.

    Has the author of this actually been to Perth? There’s not much in this article that I recognise of my home town,i.e. I was born in Perth and have lived in Scone since I was 11 months old!!! “Picturesque little market town” ? How incredibly patronising!
