The Isle Of Harris, Scotland Vacations

Are you and your friends currently pondering about having a vacation in Britain? Although the majority of visitors having a vacation in the United Kingdom of Great Britain decide to stay in popular places such as London, other tourists prefer to have a vacation in Scotland. In the article below I introduce the Isle of Harris and the reasons why it is such a great vacation destination.

Although London may be home to some of the most highly interesting museums and galleries in the whole of the United Kingdom and some of the finest tourist attractions it will not appeal to all types of people.

Some tourists have a preference for vacations which are more relaxed and far less hectic while other tourists much prefer vacations with more excitement for example sports vacations. Interestingly the island of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides (which are also know as the Western Isles of Scotland, can appeal both kinds of person.

Like a great many other folk spending most of my summer vacation on the beach has never really been my ideal vacation. Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy relaxing on a sandy beach, and the Isle of Harris certainly features some of the most breathtaking beaches in Scotland (and the UK), but, I like to travel inland a little too. I really like to spend time just soaking in the atmosphere of the place, I like to sample the local food and culture. If the truth is to be known each year I enjoy visiting new places and I try very hard trying to discover somewhere totally unique and different. This is the most likely reason why I so thoroughly enjoy visits to the island in the Hebrides named the Isle of Harris and why I frequently decide to stay in a Harris self catering house.

One of the main reasons people visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the culture and landscape of the Isles. The Harris culture has, through the generations been subtly influenced by the Celtic, Norse, Scottish and English races. These days the vast majority of people speak in the Gaelic language and though some speak English, it is more often their 2nd language. The inhabitants of the Isle of Harris are amongst the friendliest on the planet and the hospitality is known throughout the word. The people of Harris are very proud of the awesome beauty of the island and go to some length to keep the island clean and tidy so it is incredibly important not to leave litter.

It is vitally important to keep in mind that discarded rubbish doesn’t just make the countryside appear unsightly it is also incredibly dangerous to wild creatures.

Another point to remember is that the roads on Harris are drastically different to those experienced on the Scottish mainland in some areas the roads are single track and you will will be required to use passing places to safely let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. Just keep it in mind that you stop on the left. However, if the vehicle wishing to get past you is extremely large and the passing place is to your right hand side you may carefully pull over into to it to let the large vehicle pass easily but take great care not to drive off the road too much.

I hope that the above article interests you sufficiently in having a vacation or short break on Harris. Many folk the Scotland’s Outer Hebrides decide to stay in two destinations. There are a number of other islands to visit including South Uist, North Uist and Lewis. Why not consider staying in a Isle of Harris self catering house for a short while and then stay in a room in a hotel on North Uist or a hotel on South Uist for the rest of your holiday?
