In Laurinburg, I grew up listening to the bagpipes every afternoon when the high school band pipers practiced. I had quite a culture shock when I went off to college to find out that *normal* school bands dont wear kilts, nor have baton twirling Scottish dancers for entertainment.

And since many of the black families were descendants of freed slaves who took their former masters family names as their own, I did not realize that McSomething was not a normal African American name for a long time.

Truly a unique experience!

Oops seems Like I forgot to mention a couple of things. The town has a Horse Riding Center called Scotland Yard and the Scotch Meadows Country Club which happens to be in Tartan Road.

Someone else also emailed me to tell me I should have mentioned the special Scottish Heritage Weekend with the full highland games taking place in March each year.

Sorry about that. Ron

Hi

Today I am in Edinburgh (pronounced Edinburrow by us Scottish Americans) I am over here to experience the real Scotland for myself rather than just read aboot it. (see after only two days I already speak the local dialect) Had a long lie in yesterday visiting McDonalds for lunch then onto the Disney Store before going to Burger King for dinner, and back to the Sheraton Hotel for drinks and an early night. They are so Scottish here with their bagpipes and kilts but still go out of their way to really make us Americans feel at home.

I am going on a bus trip to the local Edinburgh Woollen Mills today and will probably spend all my allowance. After all when you live in California you just can never have too many sweaters.

Met this handsome man in the bar last night turns out he runs a tourist company organizing special trips to the Highlands. He told me that I had arrived just in time to book on one of their traditional Haggis Hunts later in the week. I jumped at the chance and handed over two hundred dollars straight away. Was amazed when he pointed it out that Scots don't need to give receipts as they all so honest over here.
See you later

I'll believe yours if you'll believe mine. Copper wire was invented when someone tossed a copper penny into the air - between a Scotsman and a Jew.

A man claiming both Scottish and Jewish descent told me this, saying it isn't politically incorrect if you tell these sorts of tales about your OWN ancestry.

Talking about the strong connection between Scotland and USA in particular the way Scots made America what it is today. I read recently that the Grand Canyon was actually created by two Scotsmen.

Yes Really! Apparently one day Sandy and Jock were over there on holiday when Sandy accidentally dropped a ten cent coin in a small ditch and refused to go home until they had found the coin.

Not sure I fully believe the story. Do you?
